Inauspicious Choices

I watch the pickup
pull the long dusty hill
taking you away into forever.
I see your head
gently bobbing
through the rear window
as I stand and watch
until you
are out of sight.

 My heart
goes with you
on this long journey,
but I know
I will never see you again
in this life.
It is almost
too much to bear,
though it was
a choice
made in agony
so you would be
free of my burdens.

God speed my love.
I hope in time
you will understand
and forgive
this wretched soul
and will grow
as you were intended,
toward the light.
