About Grief & Onions

Grief
is a lot like the skin
of an onion –
thin and transparent,
multiple layers,
and sometimes tough to peel away.

Onions
always cause tears,
and when least expected
the layers
crack
and peel,
crumble
and fly away at the slightest touch,
leaving the heart
of the matter
exposed
to slicing
and the possibility
of throbbing pain.

Onions
are said to absorb poison,
allowing healing –
guess there’s a lot to be said,
for onions
and broken hearts.
